The Church of the Transfiguration takes its name from one of the most mysterious and hopeful stories of the entire New Testament. The Gospel writers tell us that Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain to pray. As they looked upon their Master, his face suddenly “shone like the sun” and his clothing became glistening, “white as light.”
Moses and Elijah appeared “in glory” at his side, and the apostles heard the three talking with one another about what Jesus was about to face in Jerusalem. Then, a “bright cloud” engulfed them all and from the cloud they heard a voice declaring, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” For a few brief minutes, Jesus’ followers beheld a glory and splendor unlike any other, as if the veil of Christ’s human flesh had been lifted to reveal a radiance so dazzling, that they knew its source could be none other than heaven itself. (Matthew 17:1-9; Mark 9:2-9, Luke 9:28-36)
This is why the Transfiguration of the Lord holds such a prominent place in [our] life and prayer, for it not only reveals the unique glory of the Son of God, but it also proclaims that the divine life can be borne by human flesh, and that the resplendent light of God can shine in and through the darkest regions of every human heart. God holds out the promise that, by the power of the Holy Spirit, the lives of his people can be healed and changed, conformed more and more to the image of his Son, Jesus Christ. (Rule of Life, Chapter 8)
